Canada's National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is Monday, September 30, a day to honour the children who never returned home and the survivors of residential schools, and their families and communities.
We call on Canadians to listen to and for Indigenous voices, reflect on the legacy and impact of the residential school system, and participate in reconciliation as we build a path forward together.
In this spirit, we share the invitation set by Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society to mark Truth and Reconciliation at an event on Fri Sept 27. Every year, KFS brings the community together to honour Truth and Reconciliation - including a march, meal, educational activities, local art, children's activities, and Elder story telling.
The march begins at 12:00noon at the Ki-Low-Na-Friendship Society at 442 Leon Avenue, with events proceeding until 4:00pm. We hope you can join in this afternoon of community.
The Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society will be hosting an event to recognize Truth and Reconciliation. To honour this important date, KFS will be marching to the courthouse, providing a community meal, and displaying information regarding the history of Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. Each year, the Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society has an outstanding attendance of community members who come to recognize the tragic history of residential schools, the missing children, the families left behind, and survivors of these institutions.
As a lead in Indigenous services in Kelowna, we encourage all to come attend our event and wear an orange shirt. The orange shirt is a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations. Join us to honour those who we still think of today, as they will never be forgotten.
