The Chamber congratulates MP Stephen Fuhr who was named Secretary of State (Defence Procurement) today. The new role builds on his previous experience in the federal government as Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on National Defence 2015-2019.
Fuhr’s presence in the new government is expected to bring more attention to some of the local issues where federal involvement would be welcome, including housing, transportation infrastructure and the fight against invasive mussels.
Fuhr’s comments after the swearing in included “This opportunity reflects not only a commitment to our national security, but also the incredible trust the community of Kelowna has placed in me to help lead Canada’s defence interests into the future.” (Facebook)
Prime Minister Mark Carney stated pre-election that he would create a defence purchasing agency to speed up military equipment procurement, and in the process, buy Canadian whenever possible. At the same time, defense spending is set to rise by two per cent of GDP.
“We’re pleased that a Kelowna MP has been given this key new role in the government,” said Chamber Board Chair Derek Gratz. “It always brings more attention to a city when one of our representatives has a seat at the decision-making table in Ottawa.”
