"If governments were held to the same standards, maybe they'd be less likely to trample on our rights."

In an op-ed recently published by National Post, Canadian Chamber President and CEO Perrin Beatty discusses how the provisions in Bill C-59 have caused businesses to self-censor communications on their efforts to protect the environment and fight climate change. Proponents of Bill C-59 say these provisions are designed to combat corporate 'greenwashing'.

Beatty writes, “Unlike the criminal law, where people charged with crimes are considered innocent until proven guilty, C-59 requires the company, not those claiming it’s lying, to prove its case.”

"A law prohibiting greenwashing is vague and permits the targeting of businesses for political purposes, argues Perrin Beatty." ~ National Post
